How to remove image backgrounds for free (in your browser)

Background removal used to require Photoshop or a paid subscription. Now it runs in your browser, locally, without sending your image anywhere.

What you actually need this for

Background removal comes up in a handful of common situations: product photos for a shop or marketplace, profile photos against a plain background, logos that need a transparent version, or headshots for a presentation. The task is simple but the tooling has historically been annoying.

The old workflow involved Photoshop's magic wand tool or "Select Subject" feature, which works well but requires owning Photoshop. The newer workflow is to use an AI-based background remover, which does a better job on hair and fine details.

The problem with remove.bg

Remove.bg is the well-known option. It does a good job. The issues are cost and privacy. The free tier gives you low-resolution outputs and limits you to a handful of images. Higher resolution requires paying. And like all server-based tools, your image is uploaded to their infrastructure to be processed.

For a product photo of a lamp that is fine. For a passport photo, a photo of your face, or anything you'd rather not hand to a third party, it is worth considering whether there is an alternative.

The problem with Canva

Canva has a background removal feature, but it requires a Canva Pro subscription. You also have to create an account before you can do anything, and the feature is buried inside Canva's design editor. If you just want to remove a background and download the result as a PNG, Canva is several steps more than you need.

Canva is a strong product for design work. It is overkill for "I just need this product photo without its white background."

How browser-based background removal works

The Filagram background remover uses a machine learning model that runs locally in the browser via WebAssembly. The model detects the foreground subject in the image and removes the background, outputting a PNG with a transparent background.

Because the model runs locally, your image never leaves your device. There is no upload, no queue, no waiting for a server to respond. Processing takes a few seconds depending on image size and your hardware.

What it handles well

The tool works best with clear subject separation: people against a wall, product photos on a flat surface, animals against a uniform background. It handles hair and fur reasonably well for most use cases. Very busy backgrounds with similar colors to the subject are harder.

Getting the best result

A few things that improve output quality:

  • Start with a high-resolution image. More pixels give the model more to work with at the edges.
  • Good lighting with clear contrast between subject and background makes the result cleaner.
  • If the result has rough edges around hair, try cropping the image tighter to the subject before processing.
